NIH Training Grant

In July 2009, the University of Arizona was awarded a training grant from the National Institutes of Health for "Computational and Mathematical Modeling of Biomedical Systems." This grant, administered by the Program in Applied Mathematics, provides fellowships for graduate students working at the interface of mathematics and the biological and biomedical sciences. The trainees join a campus-wide community of faculty and students carrying out research in quantitative biology. The grant was renewed for 5 years in 2014, and a new 5-year grant with the same name was awarded in 2019.

Mission

The goal of the program is to prepare scientists for research careers in the computational analysis and mathematical modeling of medically significant biological systems through interdisciplinary graduate training.

Rationale

Progress in biomedical research increasingly requires mathematical and computational approaches. Scientists experienced at working at the interface of biology, mathematics and computation are needed. The University of Arizona offers unique opportunities for graduate training in this exciting interdisciplinary area.

Support

The program is supported by National Institutes of Health grant T32 GM132008, which was awarded by the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology program of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences at NIH. The program is administered through the Program in Applied Mathematics.
